AHMAD SUBANDIYO

b. 1983 Grobogan, Indonesia

Born on 24thApril 1983, Ahmad Subandiyo grows up in Taban, a tiny village in Grobogan, Central Java. The youngest from 6 siblings, Ahmad has the passion to paint since young, however he never had the intention of becoming a professional artist back then. After graduating from high school in 2002, he went to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta to look for job. Ahmad grew weary and bored after 2 years of working odd jobs. He then went to Ancol Art Market and met his friend there, an artist who came from his own village. This is where he discovered his true calling, his passion to become an artist is finally materialized.

Ahmad had a discussion with his parents regarding his desire of becoming an artist and study at an art school. Unfortunately, due to inadequate economic situation and limitations, his parents could not support his wish. Without much thought, Ahmad decided to embark on his own journey in becoming a self-taught artist. He learnt how to make Macramé, a form of textile produced using knotting (rather than weaving or knitting) techniques, from the late Mr. Mitro. This technique later became part of his artwork signature, as he often includes Macramé in his paintings.

Crossing path with an artist named Andot Roseno, however seals his destiny in becoming a painter. Ahmad learned all his basic foundations from Andot. As luck would have it, his friend later introduced him to a professional artist Sapto Sugiyo, whose name is no stranger to the art world. In 2007, Ahmad moved to Solo and learnt art for almost 3 years, under the guidance of his new master, Sapto Sugiyo.

Personal life experiences and journey have inspired most of Ahmad’s paintings. His works usually depict sociality and reality, created in a detailed, complex and realistic way. Behind each journey there must be a unique and interesting story, presented in a visual language style. In the course of 15 years journey as an artist, Ahmad has won several awards, including the Jakarta Art Award 2010 Finalist, Mandiri Art Award 2015 Winner and the 2018 Indonesian UOB Painting of the Year Finalist.
