ANDY WAHONO

b. 1976 Puruk Cahu, Indonesia

Andy Wahono’s works present a vast array of comic-style implausible characters and unthinkable territories in a fictional world. He graduated from the prestigious ISI Yogyakarta School of Fine Arts and has been recognised with important awards such as the Pratisara Affandi Art Award at Galeri ISI Yogyakarta in 2003.

During his time at school, he was intrigued by comic book illustration, and decided to turn it into a style of painting. There are two factors that fuel his artworks: imagination and fantasy. With his impeccable creativity, he summons onto his canvases exotic warriors juxtaposed with unorthodox creatures vigorously marching for wars. Interestingly, these paintings hardly provoke any form of violence, but the impressiveness of the scene per se. According to Andy, the world already has enough of hatred and brutality; as a result, the artist suggests that viewers should release their negative thoughts and emotions in their own fantasy.

In a typical rendering of his art, Andy opts for raw canvases and glazes them himself. This is a fundamental step for the artist to create the trompe l’oeil graphic details later in his process. He has practiced with many different types of material; however, his favourite is acrylic with which the artist is able to showcase his proficiency in transparent technique. In addition, he even incorporates Chinese ink in his intention to create darker and bolder lines. Andy executed chiaroscuro in a very unique way, which is by using a penknife to scrape out layers of paint. As a result, his characters are usually seen immersed themselves in various dimensions with such skilful manoeuvre of light and shadow.

Andy Wahono explains “I am free to create what I want, and I can illustrate a shape or a character without having to follow rules or conventions. This allows me to have the freedom of creating space and time, where the liberty of reversing these two is all mine. In this world of imagination I am the director, the producer, the writer or even the actor.
