BURHANUDIN REIHAN AFNAN

b. 1996 Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

Born in Bantul, Yogyakarta on April 1st 1996, Burhanudin Reihan Afnan is the eldest of four siblings. Although he has no background in Art, he was determined to become a full-time artist. Currently, Burhanudin is enrolled at the Indonesian Art Institution (ISI) Yogyakarta, majoring in Fine Art. Better known as Burhan, his talent for Art was discovered at a young age. As early as Junior High, he has been following his seniors around, painting on blank walls. He was the youngest member of his Street Art Crew. Burhan has always been fond and intrigued by Pop Artists’ works as they always present new characters in their creations. This inclination towards Pop Art and Lowbrow Art converted him into a Street Artist. Burhan has been inspired by other great Street Artists as well, such as Kaws, Greg Craola Simkins, Nychos, Cote Escriva, Stom 500 and HRVB from the legendary The Weird Crew.

Supported by the city government, the art of murals flourished in Yogyakarta. It has become a trend for the community and can be seen in every corner of the city. Street artists can easily find empty canvases (walls) to practice, where they learn and grow. Burhan has benefitted from this arrangement as well, improving his techniques by leaps and bounds. However, faced with many competitors, he needs to create something fresh and new to stay ahead of the competition. Fortunately, Burhan’s creativity prompted him to continue searching for something new. He created mural works on used bicycle rim wheels, merged abstract into murals and made fabricated walls from fiberglass, before applying murals on them. Street art has always been associated with walls, but he knows that it is almost impossible to showcase real concrete or brick walls in an indoor exhibition setting, hence he created the fiberglass version.

Burhan has won numerous awards ranging from drawings, paintings to mural competitions. He has been appointed to create some mural works for some Hotels and government institution including Yellow Star Hotel Gejayan Yogyakarta, Yellow Star Hotel Ambarukmo Yogyakarta, Ekkon Hotel Yogyakarta and Bantul District Court Yogyakarta.
