CADIO TAROMPO

b. 1971 Bone, Indonesia

Ariyadi or better known by his artistic name CadioTarompo has been interested in painting from a young age. He has been recognized with important awards such as the Model Painting Contest of 1995 in East Borneo and a finalist at the Jakarta Art Awards in 2008, the Indonesian Art Awards in 2010 and OUB Buana Painting Of The Year 2011.

Tarompo’s art works depict intense social and political commentaries through a masterful use of realist technique and style. He portrays the social injustices of his country with a melancholic tone swiftly captured by his vivid colour palette. His works become allegories of the changes and transformation the country witnesses when different political groups come to power. In his painting “When?” he makes a critical observation on how newly elected government officials, easily forget the promises they made the people to achieve their power. When pursuing their political quest, they often fascinate their supporters with empty promises that create an illusion of justice and equality. By including symbolic elements such as schoolbook with “PR Indonesia” (which translates Homework for Indonesia) engraved on its cover, he reminds these politicians to stay true to their promises. The girl is gazing at the empty eroded land hoping for a better tomorrow, wishing for these promises to be fulfilled.

Tarompo uses his brush like a poet uses his pen. He creates powerful compositions that are charged with symbolism and metaphors of a country that wants a better future for its youth and children.
