CAMELIA MITASARI HASIBUAN

b. 1993 Central Java, Mount Kidul, Indonesia

Camelia, the youngest artist at AXG, is a surrealist painter. As the daughter of Indonesian senior artist Husin Hasibuan, her artistic talent was nurtured from a young age. She learnt to paint since primary school, however her practice only became serious when Camelia joined SMSR Jogja – an art high school in Yogyakarta. In 2013, won the Gold Award in UOB Painting of the Year under the new upcoming artist category. In the same year, she received the Best Artwork trophy from Basoeki Abdullah Art Award. With this achievement, she was offered the privilege to be admitted to the Fine Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta with exemption from the compulsory entrance test.

Due to the fact that her father is also her first mentor in surrealism, his technique tremendously influences Camelia’s. In order to achieve the utmost perfection for her artwork, the artist too uses paintbrush with only a few bristles left. As compared to her father, whose use of colours is much inspired by the renaissance’s monochromic tone, Camelia’s is more diverse with many hints of vibrant hues. In terms of subject matter, they both address personal feelings and emotions on the environmental issues. However, Camelia’s experience has gone beyond deforestation. In her own approach, she re-enacts the aftermaths of pollution and global warming, which are the cause of animal extinction. Also, she criticises human’s egocentrism for their abusive acts towards wildlife. As a result, her paintings portray tragic stories of animals losing their homes and source of food; rhinoceros are poached for their horns. Camelia suggests that if we do not stop exploiting the earth, one day we will have to face the worst consequences of natural disasters.

“Painting is not a job, but a part of my life. If I do not paint, I feel empty. In the future, even when I’m not successful, I won’t give up [on painting].”
