DONA PRAWITA ARISSUTA

b. 1976 Sleman, Indonesia

Born in Sleman, Yogyakarta on 8th of June 1976, Dona is a graduate from the prestigious Indonesian Art Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta. In 2011, she finishes her master’s degree at Santa Dharma University, specializing in the discourse of Religion and Culture.

A Finalist of the prestigious Nokia Art Award in 2001, a Finalist at the ICC Young Sculpture Competition, Pandaan in 2010, as well as the Judge’s Favorite at Kedawung Glassware Print Design Competition Award 2002, Dona does not confine strictly in ceramics as the sole language of expressions, but she has also been making some paintings and installations.

As seen in some of her works, Dona likes to combine her sculptures with paintings creating installations, so that her works can be read in a broader context. Dona Prawita’s artworks are usually figurative sculptures showing humans and animals like figures in bright colors, which are evident in her ceramics or paintings. Her artworks often convey messages about issues that are related to social, moral, spiritual, relations between humans and their environment. These issues are being portrayed through figures that look imperfect in a fantasy world.

Occasionally, she will represent humans with heads that look like animals. Although her artworks no longer show the attachment with developing traditions in ceramics art, her works can still be categorised as figurative ceramics. One interesting thing is how she uses ceramic objects in her paintings showing that there is no strict media hierarchy in the practice of fine art in Indonesia. This condition enables the ceramics artists to freely exist together with other artists in various configurations of exhibitions using different media.

“Art is a necessity of life, not a profession and a side job. The generation that grew up without Art is a generation of disabled and needy. At a minimum, love Art, any form of Art.”
– Dona Prawita Arissuta
